As always, had an absolute blast at the Lost Dutchman Marathon. Here are the great things about it –
- Good website, just enough information and consistent emails to update you
- Easy and available Packet Pickup
- Quality Shirt and collectors item Finishers Medal (I’ll show you when I see you next)
- Flawless logistics – from bus ride to start line, start line party, fires, coffee and snacks,
- An ARMY of enthusiastic and amazing Volunteers (Demograpic is 55 plus groups of people and High School Students) who take care of all logistics, Water stops (the RV Park People that man the water stop at mile 10 are absolutely world class in cheering, offering all kinds of treats (bananas, snacks, water, gel, etc) and you can tell they LOVE being out for this
- Well and accurately marked course.
- Consistent Gel Stops (I think there were four of them?)
- Stunning course, for the most part, scenery wise, all in sight of the Superstition Mountains) – Killer Elevation though, check it out:
- The Wall” an actual brick wall thing they put up at mile 23 where they take your picture
- Finish line in Prospector Park – a long chute with bleachers so people can wait and then cheer for you if you have family or friends there
- Finish line announcer announcing your name as you cross and doing constant ad-lib, with great music behind him.
- Runners only food buffet, at the finish with yogurt, fruit, all kinds of bagged snacks and Egg, Sausage and Cheese breakfast burritos (all you can eat) Of course, there was nothing I could eat, however that’s my problem.
Oh, and they pick up your throwaway clothing (it’s cold at the start, so I bring a shirt to toss at the water stop) and it was waiting for me in a spread by the gear pickup at the end (and the volunteers read your number as you walk up so when you arrive they are already handing you your bag.
Prospector park is a great party place and they do awards almost immediately (not that I’m in danger of winning anything) While they were waiting for the Marathon awards, the announcer did a Trivia game thing with the audience which kept everyone engaged.
I think the killer thing they have is their crew of volunteers – every one of them is incredible and there are a lot – keep in mind that there are five races (I think or maybe it’s down to four) – the full, half, 10K, 8K and 5K. They take care of everyone.
I can tell you more, maybe, that’s the gist of it, If you REALLY want to hear a long winded rambling account of it, read my 2008 blog on it here (The third person from the Right in the Fireplace picture was actually there BECAUSE she read my blog, do you believe it?)
Had a great time with brother Mark Gershman, Rochelle Miller, Mary Lou and everyone else out there – Highly recommend this race!
